Making a Big Statement
Banners are one of the most versatile and impactful forms of large format advertising. Whether you're announcing a grand opening, promoting a sale, or setting up a booth at a trade show, a well-designed banner grabs attention. This guide will help you navigate the various materials, sizes, and options available in banner printing.
Common Banner Materials
Choosing the right material is critical for the durability and appearance of your banner. The best material depends entirely on where the banner will be displayed.
1. Standard Vinyl (13 oz.)
This is the most common and versatile banner material. It has a matte or gloss finish and is incredibly durable. It's suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. 13 oz vinyl is weather-resistant and provides excellent color reproduction.
2. Heavyweight Vinyl (15 oz. or 18 oz.)
For long-term outdoor displays or areas with harsh weather conditions, heavyweight vinyl is the best choice. It is thicker, more tear-resistant, and less likely to sag over time.
3. Mesh Vinyl
Mesh banners are designed specifically for windy outdoor locations, such as construction fences or between buildings. The material is perforated with tiny holes that allow wind to pass through, reducing the stress on the banner and the structure it's attached to.
4. Fabric/Polyester
Fabric banners offer a high-end, elegant look. They are typically dye-sublimated, resulting in vibrant, scratch-resistant colors. Fabric is lightweight, easy to transport, and doesn't glare under harsh indoor lighting, making it ideal for trade shows and indoor events.
Popular Banner Types
Hanging Banners
These are the traditional rectangular banners finished with hems and grommets (metal rings). They are designed to be hung using ropes, zip ties, or bungee cords. They are highly adaptable and can be attached to fences, walls, or suspended from ceilings.
Retractable Banners (Roll-up Banners)
Perfect for trade shows and presentations, these banners retract into a metallic base for easy transport. They take seconds to set up: simply pull the banner up and hook it to the support pole. They are exclusively for indoor use.
Step and Repeat Banners
These are large backdrops typically used for red carpet events, press conferences, or photo booths. The design usually features a pattern of repeating logos. They are often printed on fabric or matte vinyl to prevent camera flash glare.
Finishing Options
When ordering a standard hanging banner, pay attention to the finishing options:
- Hems: The edges of the banner are folded over and welded or sewn. This reinforces the edges and prevents tearing.
- Grommets: Metal rings placed along the edges (usually every 2 feet) to provide secure points for hanging.
- Pole Pockets: A loop of material created at the top or bottom, allowing a pole to slide through for hanging.
By understanding these materials and options, you can select a banner that perfectly suits your promotional needs and stands the test of time.
